Found in gardens & domestic surrounds. Enter houses most frequently in dry periods seeking water in kitchens or bathrooms. May nest in wall & ceiling voids. Nests also found in trees.
Nest within structure of buildings (wall voids) more commonly in the warmer areas within the building.
Have large, low profile nest mounds, up to several metres in diameter, sufaced with fine gravel & pebbles with many seperate nest entrances.
Nests are made under stones, concrete slabs & at edge of pavements (difficult to locate). Often enters the house for food.
Nest in decayed or moist wood, although sometimes nests in soil. Sometimes found co-habiting with other social insects such as termites
Found externally & internally, even well-secured cupboards & fridges are not ant-proof to these efficient maraunders
Small, dull, cloudy black ant. Pointed gaster. single node which is hidden. Pale colourisation on all tarsi. One worker size. Size = Approx: 3mm
Golden brown to brown in colour. Two nodes on pedicel. No odour when crushed. Size = Approx: 1.5 - 2mm
Red & black colour. Large ants with large mandibles. Compound eyes placed high on head. Single prominent node on pedicel. Size = Approx: 13 - 14mm
Golden brown to brown colour. Two raised nodes on pedicel. Sting present. Waist is 2 jointed. Size = Approx: 1.5 - 2.5mm
Large in size - Colour = from black to brown to dark brown to brownish orange. Distinct single node on pedicel. Mandibles have 5-8 teeth Size = Approx: 2.5mm
