Fleas are tiny wingless insects that feed off the blood of other animals.
Size: 0.5 mm - 10 mm in length but most are shorter than 5 mm
The body of a flea is very thin as if pressed from the sides and is covered with hairs and spines directed backwards.
Fleas have six legs, the hindlegs are enlarged and modified for jumping and they have claws modified for clinging to feathers and hair.
Piercing and sucking mouth parts
The flea lifecycle consists of all the stages (Egg, Larvae, Pupae to Adult). The time in which this lifecycle is completed depends heavily on the weather and temperature. At only 30 degrees Celsius, the entire flea life cycle takes only 2 weeks, from eggs to adults.
Fleas are the most widespread external parasite for pet owners worldwide. Fleas not only annoy dogs and people but can carry disease and cause other health problems.
The hatching of Pupae is triggered by warm, humid weather and most importantly to vibrations. Flea pupae can survive in the right conditions for up to 6 months.
